Pecans are making rapid progress across the state and some growers are well into harvest. These trees near Comanche are loaded with both Wichita and Pawnee pecans.
Here is a Pawnee that is cracking and with the low humidity recently they are making good progress. Most growers in Central Texas plan to start next week.
There haven't been many insect issues in Central Texas this year with almost no pecan nut casebearer, few stink bugs and low pecan weevil numbers. Only recently have any yellow or black aphids shown up and they seem to be crashing.
Last week I made a fast trip to Southwest Texas to take a look at crop progress. You can see Kyle Leonard’s crew harvesting and loading trucks. Rio Grande Organic Pecan Farms was nearby getting orchards ready to harvest - an endless chore!
